COPPYSM Endorses Ibadan Opposition Leaders' Summit Resolutions, Declares Vote of No Confidence in Current Administration and INEC Leadership.

The Coalition of Political Parties Youths and Students’ Movement (COPPYSM)—a non-partisan Youth and Students’ Movement and a broad coalition of politically engaged youths and students drawn from across all political parties, cutting across all campuses and 774 LGAs, including those of the ruling party—hereby issues this comprehensive press statement following an urgent COPPYSM National Executive Council (NEC) e-meeting held via Zoom on April 26, 2026. The outcome of this meeting has been duly approved and made available to the press by the National Director-General, Amb. Ibrahim Olawale Seriki.

COPPYSM, under the leadership of the National Director-General, aligns firmly with the resolutions reached at the Opposition Political Parties National Summit held on April 25, 2026, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

COPPYSM unequivocally endorses the Ibadan Declaration as a timely, courageous, and necessary step toward safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy from imminent collapse. The collective resolve of opposition leaders to resist the dangerous drift toward a one-party state reflects the true spirit of democratic preservation and national responsibility.

We state without ambiguity that Nigerian youths and students—who represent the backbone and future of this nation—reject in totality any calculated attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert democratic plurality and impose authoritarian political dominance. Such tactics are not only unacceptable but constitute a direct assault on the democratic demography of our sovereign nation.

COPPYSM strongly condemns what appears to be a coordinated effort between the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), under Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to manipulate the political process in favor of a predetermined outcome. This perceived alignment threatens the credibility, neutrality, and integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

Accordingly, COPPYSM hereby passes a Vote of No Confidence on:

  •  The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity, and shrinking democratic space.

  •  The leadership of INEC under Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, for failing to inspire public trust and uphold the principles of free, fair, and credible elections.

At a time when Nigeria is grappling with deepening insecurity, widespread economic hardship, and growing public despair, it is both alarming and unacceptable that democratic institutions are being weakened rather than strengthened. The Nigerian people are suffering, and the integrity of governance must not be further compromised.

We emphasize that democracy must be allowed to flow freely, grow organically, and thrive without manipulation or coercion. The Nigerian electorate must retain the unimpeded right to determine their leaders in the 2027 general elections without fear, intimidation, or systemic obstruction.

Furthermore, COPPYSM strongly condemns the persistent violence, harassment, and suppression directed at opposition parties. These actions amount to nothing less than a gross violation—indeed, a political assault—on democratic principles and civil liberties.

We therefore issue the following calls:

1. To Nigerian Youths and Students:
Rise to the responsibility of defending democracy. We will no longer remain passive while the system is derailed. Civic vigilance and lawful participation must define this critical moment in our history.

2. To the International Community:
We call on global democratic institutions, observers, and partners to closely monitor developments in Nigeria. Your proactive engagement is crucial as Nigeria approaches the defining 2027 general elections.

3. To INEC and Relevant Authorities:
Restore public confidence by ensuring transparency, neutrality, and fairness in all electoral processes. Extend deadlines where necessary and eliminate policies that hinder inclusive participation.

4. To All Opposition Parties:
Sustain the unity demonstrated at the Ibadan Summit and work diligently toward presenting a consensus presidential candidate capable of restoring hope and rebuilding Nigeria.

COPPYSM remains committed to advocating for justice, equity, and democratic integrity. We stand firmly with the Nigerian people in the collective struggle to reclaim and rebuild our nation.

"A New Nigeria, If Thinkable, Is Workable, Is Achievable — and It Must Be Democratic."

Signed:
Amb. Ibrahim Olawale Seriki,
National Director-General
Coalition of Political Parties Youths and Students’ Movement (COPPYSM).
