"Women Are Not Sacrifices for Wealth – Olori Elizabeth Yetunde Lawal Bello Speaks Out on Ritual Killings and Gender-Based Violence"
With a heart full of joy and gratitude, I, Olori Elizabeth Yetunde Lawal Bello, Olori Oba of Isheri Olofin Kingdom, join the world in celebrating the incredible strength, resilience, and achievements of women on this special occasion of International Women’s Day 2025.
Women are the backbone of families, the pillars of our communities, and the foundation of every progressive society. Our contributions span across every sector—whether in leadership, business, governance, education, health, agriculture, or the home—demonstrating that women are not just nurturers but also powerful change-makers.
This year’s theme, "Inspire Inclusion," is a clarion call for us all to work towards a society where every woman, regardless of her background, has access to opportunities that enable her to excel. Inclusion means empowering women with education, financial independence, and leadership roles while breaking down barriers that hinder their progress.
The Role of Women in Nation Building
In our great Isheri Olofin Kingdom and beyond, women have been at the forefront of progress. As mothers, daughters, and wives, we shape the next generation with values of hard work, kindness, and resilience. As professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, we drive economic growth and social development.
Let us take a moment to celebrate the women who, despite challenges, continue to rise above limitations. The market women who ensure food is available, the teachers who mold young minds, the healthcare workers who care for the sick, and the female leaders who champion justice and equity—each of you is a beacon of light.
Condemning Ritual Killings and Gender-Based Violence Against Women
However, as we celebrate, we cannot ignore the dark reality that many women and young girls in our society continue to face grave dangers—particularly gender-based violence, ritual killings, and exploitation.
The tragic case of Abdul Rahman and Afusat in Ilorin is one of many heartbreaking stories that highlight the dangers young women face today. Afusat, a promising young lady, was lured into a deadly trap by someone she trusted and was brutally murdered for ritual purposes. Her life was taken in the name of greed and wickedness, a fate that should never befall any woman.
Similarly, across different parts of the country, we see cases where young girls are used for money rituals, and many who were used or escape end up running mad on the streets. This growing evil must be condemned in the strongest terms. Women are not objects for sacrifice or tools for quick wealth. "No tradition, belief, or ambition should justify the killing or exploitation of women.
I call upon law enforcement agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and all well-meaning Nigerians to take urgent and decisive action against these atrocities. Ritual killers, human traffickers, and all those who prey on innocent women must face the full wrath of the law.
The Way Forward: Protecting Women and Girls
To combat this menace, we must take collective action:
1. Stronger Laws and Accountability: The government must strengthen laws against ritual killings and gender-based violence. There must be no leniency for perpetrators, and cases should be treated with urgency.
2. Community Vigilance: Families and communities must be more vigilant. Parents should monitor their daughters' movements and educate them on the dangers of deceitful individuals who promise quick riches.
3. Economic Empowerment and Education: Girls must be educated and empowered to be financially independent. When women have economic stability and self-worth, they become less vulnerable to desperation and deception.
4. Public Awareness and Advocacy: Religious and traditional institutions must educate the public on the dangers of ritual killings and gender-based violence. Society must reject the false belief that wealth can be acquired through the blood of innocent women.
5. Creating Safe Spaces for Women: More shelters, helplines, and support systems must be put in place to protect women who are at risk. Women facing abuse, exploitation, or threats must know that there is help available.
A Charge to Women: Discipline, Contentment, and Self-Worth
While society must fight against predators and criminals, I also want to speak directly to my fellow women and young girls.
We live in a world where materialism is being promoted as success. Too often, young girls are lured into dangerous situations by the promise of quick money, flashy lifestyles, and social media pressure.
I urge all women to embrace the values of discipline, contentment, and self-respect. True success comes from hard work, patience, and integrity, not from shortcuts that may lead to death, disgrace, or destruction.
Mothers must educate their daughters about self-worth, dignity, and the importance of avoiding toxic relationships and deceitful individuals. We must also train our sons to respect women and protect them, ensuring that the next generation does not continue these evil practices.
A Call for More Opportunities for Women
Beyond protecting women from harm, we must also create more opportunities for them. This means:
- More women in leadership, politics, and decision-making roles
- Greater support for female entrepreneurs
- Ensuring that every girl receives quality education
- Providing mentorship and platforms that uplift women
As we celebrate today, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a world where women are not just included, but valued; not just protected, but empowered.
Conclusively, to all the remarkable women of Isheri Olofin Kingdom, Alimosho, Lagos State, and beyond, I salute your strength, your courage, and your unwavering dedication to making the world a better place.
You are the true definition of queens—graceful, powerful, and unstoppable. Let us continue to uplift one another, stand against injustice, and inspire the next generation of strong, fearless women.
Happy International Women’s Day!
